Frankly, I don't think ignorance is a valid excuse. I know the proper response is supposed to be WE NEED TO TEEEEEACH THEEEESE KEEEEEDS about racism because they JUST! DON'T! KNOW! and it's so tragic that anyone would think this is OK and not get why it's offensive because we live in such a post-racial world and whatnot THESE POOR KIDS JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND.

But fuck that. Get yourself educated. I just want to know what sort of lily-white environment you have to grow up in to be THIS ignorant on racial issues, because I certainly didn't have a lot of contact with people of other races when I was growing up and I STILL knew blackface was not cool.

My wife organised a charity gala last night, with a vague Michael Jackson theme (tacky, but hey - it works) and there were lots of black and Asian people there, because that's the business circles my wife works in. Everyone was dressed normally - suits and so on. Except for a small group of white people who'd decided to come in afro wigs.

And blackface.

Seriously? Even if the intent was to dress up as Michael Jackson circa "Off the Wall", I can't fathom someone deeming that even remotely humorous or appropriate. Of course, I'm from Detroit, and that kind of shit will get you murdered here.

On a side note, My wife grew up in a very white suburb, but has worked with inner city juvenile criminals on a regular basis for the past 5 years. She's adopted speaking to the kids she works with in street speak (i.e. "Ebonics" for the white folks) as it works well in communicating with them and garnering their respect. Problem is, whenever she talks with black people now, she inadvertently starts speaking that way. I have to occasionally remind her that not all black people are from the hood and would probably prefer that you speak normally.

That's weird, I had a rather annoying discussion recently with some co-workers in which I basically had to explain to them why a white person painting his or her face black to impersonate Michael Jackson is inappropriate.

I've recently had an increasingly large amount of awkward racial moments the more I go out to places around here. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, because anything on campus and North of it is white as hell, but I still have a great amount of concern when someone says "I LIKE YOU DUDE YOU'RE ONE OF THE GOOD ONES" while talking to me at a party.

I'm also starting to meet more of the English and Creative Writing grad students, and it's quite obvious that they desperately want some sort of minority in their circles to sort of show off. Kind of like we're all Pokemon and having a Asian dude hanging out with you is like getting Squirtle for the first time.

And the post-racial malarkey is depressing. Those guys KNEW it was a bad idea to do that, the problem is that the general consensus and attitude I am starting to see is that "it's cool brah, because we're totally over that racist stuff." So essentially it's sort of alright to slap on some blackface because that was totally a long time ago and we can have fun with it now that all that racism is over.
