Watching this tonight. I'm struck by just how easily they make the characters in this movie likable prior to the Blob even appearing. So few horror movies bother to do that, it seems.

It's really good. It's maybe a perfect monster movie, and it really holds up after 20 years.

It's a lot of fun, and the effects are awesomely gooey. I did feel the attempt at an epic climax was a bit of a misstep given the obvious budget limitations, though. Also, you should quit being so judgmental Brad. I mean, having a wet bar in the boot of your car and plying girls with alcohol to take advantage of their comatose bodies doesn't automatically make you a date rapist. Especially if the body belongs to Erika Eleniak. She's totally asking for it.

Nerdy as hell thing I noticed last night: Moss, the town mechanic in whose garage the snowmaker is kept, is the voice of Jet from Cowboy Bebop.

Hah, I never noticed that!
And the effects in this are fantastic. Combined with possibly the meanest streak of any 80's horror films, and you've got a classic monster flick.
The date rapist kill is a great example of the spirit of the film. The rapist's innocent victim has clearly been digested from inside out, the poor dear, but the movie expects us to celebrate this kill regardless because of what happens to the guy.

Yeah, it has a fairly callous attitude to its characters. I particularly liked how the sheriff doesn't even get a death scene, you just see his partially digested corpse float by while the object of his affections meets her demise.

Yeah, that's great. And what makes it great is that these characters, like I said, are all pretty likable people. They're all introduced pretty quickly, but in ways where you get a quick glimpse of them and a little bit of flesh to their characters, so that when they do die it has that little bit more of an impact.

The handsome quarterback, who would be an asshole in any other movie, is a really nice guy! And he's like the first to go!

I knew he would go early. The misunderstood bad boy was set up as the hero from the beginning. My friends and I saw every horror movie that came out those days and were very familiar with the 80's formula. As snarky teens we pretty much mocked this in the theater, but certainly enjoyed all the blob kills. Come to think of it, wasn't McQueen a misunderstood bad boy in the original?

McQueen is supposed to be a bad boy, but the original film is bizarrely nice about everyone. Even the town cop is like "Gee, if Steve says there's a gelatinous monster on the loose, I think we should hear him out!"
